African Wine? |

Dh and I had a great bottle of Australian wine last night with dinner, and we started talking about all the wines we enjoy and wondered if there were any African wines out there? I would imagine there would be, but I've never really paid any attention. I've had North and South America, Europe, and Australia.
Any clue about Africa or other regions? |

There is plenty of wonderful wine coming out of South Africa. Most notable are the Chenin Blanc-based whites (referred to there as Steen), and Bordeaux and
Rhone styled reds.
Sadly, for a variety of reasons - some climatic, some religious, some political - few other countries on the continent outside of South Africa produce much wine. There is some production in Northern Africa, namely in Algeria (a country that when a French colony used to produce massive amounts of cheap wine sold in bulk and bottled in France) and Morocco, but its really quite minimal. Most grapes grown in these countries are turned into raisins, rather than wine. Mead - a fermented beverage made from honey and water, and often referred to as 'honey wine' - is a popular beverage in Western Africa and often found in Ethiopian restaurants in this country.
